Major Spoiler Warning
(Images are from the fan remake)
Chapters 1-3 of DOMO's mirror quest is based on Xuan Yuan Sword 1, an incomplete game that was hastily released due to the developers being drafted into the military, 2 picks up the story from 1.
I will use Aeria localized names where appropriate.
World Notes: the world of Xuan Yuan Sword 2 has multiple continents, and is said to take place in prehistoric China. The name of the towns are all different, but there are analogues to Darkdale and Collington.
Section 1 - Tranquilton
Analogue: Chasm King Trials Chapter 4
Horace, Conan and Garnet are on a boat, drifting towards a different continent...
Upon landing, they find themselves in Tranquilton, a town that has been preparing a tribute to the bandits in Grizzly Garrison, they offer to destroy the garrison to help the locals.
They meet White Fox when exiting the garrison for the first time, who offers to treat Garnet but was not accepted.
They return to Tranquilton to report the deed, and meets a guy they rescued, who points out that there may be a secret exit in the garrison, allowing people to proceed to the next part.
Notes: There was no second fight. Instead you can basically waltz straight in and kill Jimmy to finish the section.
Section 2 - Town by the River
Analogue: Chasm King Trials Chapter 5
The heroes arrive in town and goes to the gambling ring to find information, finding out that the local brothel owner is a demon. They slay the demon.
The heroes find that there was a demon plaguing the Swan River, which was preventing commute. They get on the boat to challenge it, who was in fact Tricksy Turtle, but was dragged to the bottom of the Great Lingyang Marsh. Here they wake up to see Pandora's Box next to them, with Genie of the Jar explaining that he had in fact saved them and is working to combat the monster threat. Here also begins the longest plot line in the series, where Genie of the Jar strives for his ideal world without conflict.
They find two lion statues in the caverns, which explains to them the entire backstory and why Bad Snake is trying to stir chaos in the world.
"Eighteen Years ago the Human-Monster War ended a stalemate as both sides endured enormous losses, the Good God, Evil God, and the human champion Genie of the Sword were all incommunicado. After, with humanity's ingenuity in weaponry, they began a mass extermination of monsters across the land. Some monsters then appealed to Bad Snake, who appealed to the Goddess Pandora to intervene, but in the years of inaction on Pandora's part, monsters became more and more endangered, and humanity became more and more bloodthirsty, massacring at will. Hence, in his anger, Bad Snake decided to lead the monsters himself for vengeance on Humanity."
After the exposition, the heroes find Tricksy Turtle and fights him, but before they were able to kill him, he ran away, opening a passage to the surface.
Notes: Tricksy Turtle's importance was promoted in DOMO. In the original he was just another monster. The backstory exposition was not in DOMO as well. White Fox did not join the party at this time. This is also why Darkdale Tunnel exists. "Evil God" was later retconned to be Bad Snake, so he in fact was not "incommunicado". As for who "Good God" is, there are only theories. Softstar retconned the series so much that it is questionable they'll ever bother sorting out this particular plot point anymore.
Section 3 - Waterseeping Town
Analogue: Guild Mission
The heroes arrive in Waterseeping Town (which is basically Darkdale), and find it in despair. It's a mining and smithing town but they dug the mine into a great monster "Madam Malachite", who took over the mine and thus deprived the town of iron.
The heroes goes into the mine and defeat Malachite, finding a huge stone tablet, which details how to enter Canute Canal. They re-enter the underwater caverns in Lingyang Marsh, activating the canal.
At the end of the tunnel, they find a chest, as well as White Fox. White Fox explains why he's here and what's in the chest. It turns out to be the legendary "Living Soil", used by Yu's father Gun (Canute is the localized name of Yu the Great in DOMO) to attempt to control the prehistoric flood. It is also the soil which the great Giantwood grows upon, and thus only its bearers can enter Giantwood, which is said to be able to reach Heaven itself.
White Fox joins at this time, and the heroes obtains the soil.
The heroes arrive at Giantwood Manor, meeting a wizard who tells them that a demon had taken over the manor and transformed into a wizard, and that the heroes can enter with their Living Soil to defeat it.
Upon entering, they meet the Sneaky Peak Wizard, who, thinking they're intruders, summons two Gate Guardians on them.
Upon defeating the Guardians, the Wizard explains that the first wizard was the actual demon, who had snuck in while he was busy fighting the heroes. The heroes enter Giantwood manor, finding the demon. The Demon claimed that he had learned all the secrets of the Sneaky Peak, but was defeated by the heroes.
Sneaky Peak Wizard tells the heroes upon their return that he already knows about their victory. Horace asks about the whereabouts of the Evil God. Sneaky Peak Wizard informs Horace that there is a tunnel in Giantwood Manor that will bring them to another continent, where they may be able to find their answer.
Notes: Obviously, there's no chapter for this. It's also unclear what gender the original Malachite is, as it received a significant makeover.
Section 4 - Charleston Manor
Analogue: First part of Chasm King Trials - Chapter 7, Shaman Level 20 LQ.
The heroes find out from a strange old coffinmaker that the Savage King Flag has been planted in Foggy Forest, preventing people from navigating, and that the Compass Cart is needed to combat this evil.
The heroes goes to Charleston Manor, finding out that the entire place is in a drought, and that the only way to stop the drought is to fix the mechanism in Canute Canal used to redirect water to the manor, but the canal is infested with monsters so he's asking for help to fix the mechanism.
Once the heroes did that, Sir Charleston reveals he in fact has the compass cart, which he's willing to sell for 3,000 taels of silver, but it's clear he's ripping the heroes off despite the heroes helping him.
Upon entering Foggy Forest, a huge monkey jumps out, angry at you for defeating his trap.
Notes: This is the first time when DOMO reversed certain plot points of the original. This is probably why Canute Canal II is located in Blakatoa, however, the "canal" in Charleston manor was more akin to a sewer, and a different Canute Canal is used to redirect water flow as opposed to the one in Charleston Manor. The Demonic Monkey King in DOMO was trying to prevent Savage King's Flag from being destroyed, whereas in the original, he was just pissed somebody brought the compass cart.
Section 5 - Plains City
Analogue: Chasm King Trials 6 and latter half of 7. Mobile Chapter 29
The heroes arrive in Plains City (which is basically Collington), and hear about the Emperor Gang. Garnet notes that the city feels really familiar to her. Upon entering the Gang, they meet the Wareye brothers, who dismisses them as worthless. They then meet Mr. Godwin and his wife, who recognizes Garnet as their daughter. But during the reunion, Garnet goes berserk and attacks Mr. Godwin, who was pushed aside by White Fox, who took the brunt of the attack. White Fox dies and returns to his true form as a fox, surprising the others.
Mr. Godwin asks the Wizard of the Grand Pine for an explanation. The wizard deduces that the Phoenix had probably placed a sleeper curse on Garnet so that she would assassinate her father, and mentions that there may be a way to revive White Fox since they're carrying Pandora's Box, but first they must begin the rainmaker ritual to douse the volano on Blakatoa.
During the ritual, the Phoenix flies over and interrupts the ritual, burning many gang members to cinders and mortally wounding the Wizard of the Grand Pine. The wizard tells the heroes that the ritual was incomplete and must be done some other way, as well as that Sarira located in the Great Buddha Statue to the west can be used to revive White Fox when used with the powers of Pandora's Box.
The heroes scale the Buddha Statue and recovers the sarira, which revives White Fox. White Fox reveals that while in the Box, the Genie of the Jar told him another way to douse Blakatoa's flames, via the Canute Canal's mechanism for rerouting the rivers. After doing so and reporting back to Mr. Godwin, the heroes begin their trek up to Blakatoa.
The heroes see Bad Snake on the Peak, and challenges him, but instead, Bad Snake summons the Phoenix, who was then defeated by the heroes. Bad Snake himself fights, first in his human form, then his dragon form. Upon dying, Genie of the Jar congratulates the heroes on their victory, but says that there are still monsters plaguing the world, and that he has a plan to suck them all into the box. He asks the heroes to drop the Box into the Creator's Vessel in Sneaky Peak. When asked where the Sneaky Peak is, he reveals the entrance is in fact at Giantwood Manor, controlled by the Sneaky Peak Wizard, who was tasked by Pandora to only open it to people bearing the four treasures. The treasures are hidden in four towers guarded by monsters.
Upon returning to Emperor Gang, Mr. Godwin reveals that he only has a replica of the Emperor Sword, and that it's the replica scaring monsters from attacking his city. He asks the heroes to find the real sword, and mentions he's looking for a successor to his position.
The heroes depart, and finds another inn in the wilderness. A gang member was blocking an entrance, but allows them to pass, telling them that another monster had been plaguing the paths behind him. The heroes enter and finds Tricksy Turtle, and engages him in combat. Upon nearly losing, Turtle rams into Horace, and both falls into into the cliffs below.
Notes: Many, many changes here. Quintuple Manor (itself lifted from Journey to the West) was made to replace the Great Buddha Statue, which I'm not sure why they did, since a large Buddha could be seen in Heaven. The Wareye Brothers were originally subordinates of Mr. Godwin, whose zeal of killing monsters arose from monsters killing their parents. They also had different first names and had nothing to do with Demonslayer Sword Academy. The entire plot point of the Wizard of the Grand Pine was eliminated (his position as Godwin's adviser was even arguably usurped by the Collington Wizard in the Chasm Trials, except for the dying part, of course). In Mobile, which is mostly a continuation of the Chasm Trials, another plot switch was made, with the towers being visited first before the Tricksy Turtle business.
Section 6 - World of Pandora's Box
Analogue: Mobile Chapter 30 and 31
Horace awakes to see his body on the ground in an unknown place. He wanders off, eventually finding a shack where he meets Genie of the Jar. Genie of the Jar explains to him that he was probably sucked into the Box by Turtle, and that somebody may be trying to steal his body. He quickly returns to where his body was, only to find that it's gone. Genie of the Jar informs him that he must get his body back. He makes his way across the World of Pandora's Box, which contains areas stitched together with no rhyme and reason. Eventually he finds the demon, and engages in a fight with himself. He succeeds and brings the body back to the Genie of the Jar, who restores his soul to it. Genie of the Jar explains to Horace that he wished to create a world where there's no conflict between humans and monsters. (His dream is an overarching plot point that also persists through Dance of Maple Leaves and Xuan Yuan Sword 4.)
He leaves and wanders into Waterfall Village, finding it a paradise. He enters a cave and finds the Waterfall Wizard, who informs him that the Genie of the Jar had been tricking him all along, and that Genie of the Jar grows stronger the more he uses the Box. Horace confronts the Genie of the Jar, who points out that no immortal could have been caught by the Box and that it's obviously Tricksy Turtle. Horace returns and kills Tricksy Turtle for good, leaving the Box.
He ends up inside Waterfall Village again, and, confused, he enters the cave where the fake wizard was. He sees the real wizard, who tells him that he's the real deal because Turtle doesn't know he is White Fox's Teacher. He explains that Horace had saved his village and that his friends are waiting for him, so he Teleports Horace out. Horace finds Garnet and White Fox waiting for him. He tells White Fox about the wizard's words.
Later that night, White Fox tells Horace the real reason he had started following them - He fell in love with Garnet. However, he notes that it was Garnet who refused to give up and waited at that location every day, and thus it's clear who she actually loves. He further says that it's impossible for human and monster to be a couple anyway, and that Horace should not let her down.
Section 7 - Eternal Spring Town
Analogue: The Chasm Trials Chapter 8, Mobile Chapters 22, 23 and 24.
The heroes (minus Conan) goes to Eternal Spring Town, hearing from the mayor that the Wind Tunnel will probably be unpassable for three months, and that the leader of the Demonslayer Sword Academy has a treasure that can stop the wind. In the Inn, they hear that Conan and the Wareye Brothers are fighting for the position of Emperor Gang Leader, and that they had went to yet another Canute Canal to exterminate the Nomads within as a competition.
They enter the canal and finds dead nomads all over. White Fox explains that they're a peaceful tribe who spends 7 years in a cocoon and dies 7 days after, so they love life. They find a wounded Conan on the ground, who tells them the Wareye Brothers have gone insane and are indiscriminately killing the old and young. Conan tried to stop them and was defeated. Horace intervenes as the Wareye brothers were about to begin another slaughter, and they kill the two.
After, they decide to say the Wareye brothers died in battle and took down the monsters with them. The nomads say they will seal the canal forever so they don't have to live with humans anymore. They make their way to Thunderbog Tower, the base of operations for Demonslayer Sword Academy, only to find it under attack by the Minotaur. They defeat the Minotaur, who retreats, and they meet the Demonslayer Sword Academy Leader, but his daughter mistakes them for demons and attacks, resulting in a brief tussle.
The leader gives them the windstopping treasure, and they make their way to the Wind Tunnel, finding a Wind Beast inside. They defeat the Wind Beast.
Notes: the "Nomads" are actually a tribe of bird people. DOMO also had a plot point with Thunderbog Wisewood sacrificing himself for peace.
Section 8 - War Marshal City
Analogue: Mobile Chapters 25, 26, 27, 28, and 32
The heroes make their way to War Martial City as well as the four towers nearby. They defeat each of the guardians Bat King, Nether Snake, Zombified Demon and Miasma Demon for the Feng, Moon Lute, Sun Mirror, and Statue treasures. With the four treasures collected they were able to gain access to the Moon Palace, where they helped out Chang'e.
The heroes return to Giantwood Manor, where Sneaky Peak Wizard teleports them into Sneaky Peak
Notes: You can do the towers in any order, but ideally you would leave North last as the Moon Palace requires all four treasures as well. Mobile, which has replaced them with the Placid Towers, goes North, West, East, South, with the four divine beasts as final bosses, but the original treasure guardians still make an appearance. Unlike DOMO where the four towers are identical in height, the original's other towers are 6 floors, but North Tower actually is said to reach the moon (you'll use a teleporter that will take you to floor 30, scaling to 31, and then another teleporter to floor ??).
Section 9 - Sneaky Peak
Analogue: None
Upon arriving at Creator's Vessel, a man who had appeared to the group several times before in flashes appears again. The group defeats him, and Genie of the Jar instructs Horace to throw the Box into the Vessel. A whirlwind appears and the world is sucked into Pandora's Box.
Genie of the Jar gloats that he has finally gotten the world and that he will be the god of the new world. The Goddess Pandora appears, exclaiming that she was too late to stop the disaster. It appears Turtle was right that the Genie of the Jar does get Stronger the more Pandora's Box is used, and that he had planned to absorb the world in the beginning. The Goddess also reveals the man they just defeated was in fact Horace's Father, Genie of the Sword.
Horace takes the Emperor Sword. They enter Pandora's Box and defeat Genie of the Jar, who had transformed into a dragon.
Pandora proclaims that the gods will forever separate humanity and monsters and erase all trace of this disaster, and thus the story ends. White Fox becomes a doctor, Conan returns to being a wanderer. Horace becomes a hermit, and Garnet is last shown speaking of their adventure to a little girl who calls her "older sister."
Note: Yes, I know there's a Death Note thing in there, but this game was 1994, almost 10 years before Death Note.
