How to get an Onyx
Dice Chest
Onyx Buyer
The onyx buyer will give you a chest of the corresponding animal to the onyx's level, except for the ones with 0/3 insertion times, which he will give you one animal lower (i.e. 50-60 0/3 -> Red Dragon). Insertion times determine the color. 3 is Green, 2 is Blue, 1 is Red, 0 is Red.
The Five Greater Instances
Commonly known as "T2" or "Ubers", these are the five quests at ESP, CC2, TGT, Foggy Forest, and Blakatoa Peak that require you to finish the field map quest and turn in the item gained.
Onyxes from these quests are usually 45-55 and slot 1. Slot 2 and 50-60 onyxes slot 1/2 are occasionally given.
From Mobs
Non-boss mobs have a rare chance of giving you these slot 2, 1/1 insertion time onyxes:
the level of the onyx is dependent on the level of the mob by this formula:
0 <= (Upper level limit of onyx - mob level) <= 4
i.e. a level 23 monster would drop a 15-25 onyx. A level 50 monster would drop 40-50 onyx, and so forth.

The Earthly Roots Onyxes

How to use an Onyx
An onyx has several constraints:
Level Constraint: The gear must be within the level constraint of the onyx.
Position Constraint: The gear must be the same position as the onyx specifies.
Slot Number Constraint: The gear must have an empty nth slot as the onyx specifies
Insertion Times Constraint: The onyx must have more than 0 insertion times left.
To Create slots, you need mallets, which are currently cash shop items. You can get some from seizer's.
The mallet will specify Armor or Weapon, the level constraint, and up to what number of slots it can make.
Once a slot is created, use your onyx skill in everyday skills (you can bring it up by going to the tab, or double-clicking any onyx or mallet), and insert the onyx in.
While Slotted Equipment is tradable provided you got the armor as a tradable, as soon as you put an onyx into the gear, it will become untradable.
How to remove an Onyx
Go to your Onyx Skills, double click the gear, click the onyx icon below it, and press start to remove that onyx. Every time you remove an onyx, you decrease its insertion times by 1.
